The First Year Circle will meet on Thursdays from 5 to 7 PM in Loew Hall 114. This page will be updated after each session with homework, in-class materials, and other information.

Announcements:

• New! 4-27-14: Registration is now open for this year's UW Math Hour Olympiad!
• 3-6-14: You are invited to join us for the first meeting of the UW Math Hour on Sunday, March 16.
• We will participate in the Bay Area Math Olympiad on Tuesday , February 25.
• Our first meeting of the new year will be held on Thursday, January 9.
• 11-20-13: Our last meeting before winter break will be held on December 12. We will reconvene in 2014 beginning on Thursday, January 9.
• 11-14-13: This week we began talking about graphs, which are mathematical objects that consist of a bunch of dots (called vertices) and some lines that connect those dots (called edges). Graphs are incredibly useful for visually representing a math problem or modeling real-world problems, such as transit problems or the internet.
• 11-8-13: This week we continued our exploration of coin flip experiments, couting, and probability. For next week, finish the last two problems from the worksheet. What properties of coin flips can you measure and compute expected values for? For example: how many blocks of heads and tails are there when you flip a coin 10 times? What is the largest consecutive number of heads/tails that appears?

• 10-25-13: We will meet on Halloween! Because we do not anticipate that everyone will be able to come, we will be hosting a Math Auction for all students from both the first and second year circles who are able to attend. Check your email for more details!
