Homework #1
For your first homework
assignment, set aside 3 uninterrupted hours to attempt this old
prelim. No notes, books or other assistance. Wait a day, then continue
to work on the problems you did not
get, but do this work on separate paper. You may discuss the problems
with others and consult your course notes for this second portion, but
don't ask older students who are not in the class and don't look up
solutions online. Turn in both sets of papers on Wednesday April 4,
clearly indicating what portions were done under the exam conditions
of the first part. Ignore the statement at the beginning of the prelim
about doing only 4 problems.
