Topic 0: Organization of the Course

We will discuss the organization of the course, assignments, evaluation and work expectations. More details will appear on this web site soon.

Topic 1: Number Words, on ongoing thread

Chapter 1 of the text, The Romance of Numbers, is fascinating but is easily adaptaable to a single class discussion or one weekly assignment. Instead, we will dip into this throughout the quarter.

Main New Topic: Doing Arithmetic and Algebra by Geometry

Most of the first meeting will be devoted to explorations of number relations that come from geometry. These will be taken from the rich collection of examples in Chapter 2 of the text.. The ideas investigated in class will include

  • Modular arithmetic and casting out nines
  • Triangular numbers, area and sums of sequences
  • The concept of a gnomon for generating number sequences
  • Number sequences from 3D solids

The reading for these topics will be Chapter 2 of the text.
