Tourist Activities

• Suzzallo Library Reading Room - this neo-Gothic room is as spectacular as any real Gothic reading room anywhere else in the world.
• Main Quadrangle (between Raitt, Miller, Smith and Savery Halls), with cherry trees, hopefully in bloom at the time of the conference.
• The view of Mt. Rainier (on a sunny day) from the Red Square (between Suzzallo Library, Kane, Gerberding and Meany Halls), or from the Drumheller Fountain
• Foucault pendulum in the Physics/Astronomy Auditorium - three story high pendulum in a postmodern architectural setting.
• Burke Museum has interesting exhibits on Northwest Native Americans and diverse permanent collections

The main tourist attractions are located in downtown Seattle. They include

• "Seattle Center" (Space Needle with a restaurant and view deck, Pacific Science Center with a Science Museum, Rock and Roll Museum, monorail connection to a shopping center, fast food)
• Pike Place Market (souvenirs, seafood and more)
• Waterfront (Seattle Aquarium, sightseeing boat rides)
• Pioneer Square (historical district)

If you do not have a rental car, you can reach the downtown from the university area by bus. Bus schedules are available at the Student Union Building (HUB) or online at King County Metro. The best connections seem to be busses 70, 71 and 43.

Sightseeing outside Seattle (1 day minimum, requires car)

Here is a list of popular tourist destinations in the vicinity of Seattle. Check the conditions before driving to any of the national parks.

• Mt. Rainier National Park (about 2 and 1/2 hour drive one way, expect snow at the parking lot)
• Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument (about 3 hour drive one way, expect snow)
• Olympic National Park (about 3 to 4 hour drive one way, requires a ferry ride, the Olympic Peninsula has many places of interest on the coast, outside the borders of the National Park)
• Snoqualmie Falls (the closest of the listed destinations)
