Graduate Student Representative

Responsibilities

In the 2023-24 school year, I am serving as the Graduate Student Representative for the UW Mathematics Department. The following are my responsibilities:

• General Student Advocacy: Solicit graduate student feedback on numerous topics over the course of the academic year, and convey this to faculty during appropriate conversations or meetings.
• Faculty Meetings: Attend faculty meetings and convey student thoughts and concerns to the department.
• Graduate Committee Meetings: Attend meetings and convey student thoughts and concerns in meetings which may make decisions about the program (and students within it).
• GPC Meetings: Meet regularly with the Graduate Program Chair to convey student thoughts and concerns.
• Current Topics/Meet the Department Seminar: Organize and coordinate the Current Topics/Meet the Department seminar, traditionally held 4:30pm-5:30pm on Thursdays in the fall quarter.
• Incoming Student Activities: Organize, coordinate, and moderate the Incoming Student Panel in the fall and the Prospective Student Panel in the spring, and attend First-Year Orientation in the fall.
• GSR/GSSC Elections: Solicit nominations and run election for the next year's GSR and GSSC.

Current Topics Seminar

The Current Topics Seminar is a seminar aiming to give early graduate students an opportunity to meet the department, learn about the variety of research directions available, and provide a starting point for finding an advisor.

In Winter 2024, Current Topics Seminar will be held (sporadically) on Thursdays 4:30pm - 5:30pm in PDL C-038. The schedule for Winter 2024 is:

• January 11th: Jayadev Athreya - Billiards in polygons and polyhedra.
• January 18th: Max Lieblich - What is algebraic geometry, really? (1:30pm in PDL C-401).
• January 25th: Cynthia Vinzant - The geometry of polynomials.
• February 1st: Rekha Thomas - Problems on Graphs though Optimization and Geometry.
• February 8th: Gabriel Paternain - Zoll surfaces, invisible lenses and rigidity.
• February 15th: Julia Pevtsova - Representation theory without vector spaces.
• February 22nd: Ricky Liu - Dynamical algebraic combinatorics.
• February 29th: Chris Hoffman - Stable matchings with correlated preferences.
• March 7th: Bobby Wilson - Buffon's Needle Probability and Regularity of Sets (3:00pm in C-038).

In Autumn 2023, Current Topics Seminar will be held on Thursdays 4:30pm - 5:30pm in PDL C-038. The schedule for Autumn 2023 is:

• October 5th: Bianca Viray - Isolated points on curves.
• October 12th: Sándor Kovács - Algebra = geometry.
• October 19th: Isabella Novik - The fascinating world of polytopes.
• October 26th: Steffen Rohde - How to make a sphere out of two trees, and why.
• November 2nd: No Talk (Colloquium).
• November 9th: Stefan Steinerberger - Particle Growth Models in the Plane (DLA, DBM, ...).
• November 16th: Stefan Steinerberger - Transition into Research (Career Transitions Series).
• November 23rd: No Talk (Thanksgiving).
• November 30th: Farbod Shokrieh - Analytic geometry (over archimedean and non-archimedean fields).
• December 7th: Max Lieblich (postponed).

Office Hours

In the spirit of Max Lieblich's "listening hours" as GPC, I will hold GSR office hours regularly. Feel free to come by and let me know what's on your mind!

• In Spring 2024, office hours are every other Monday afternoon from 4pm to 5pm in my office (PDL C-552), starting April 1st (Apr 1, Apr 15, Apr 29, May 13, May 27).
  • Note: The office hours on May 13th have been moved to 45th and Memorial from 2pm to 6pm on May 14th.
  • Note: Due to Memorial Day on May 27th, office hours have been moved to May 28th from 4:30pm to 5:30pm.
• In Winter 2024, office hours are every other Monday afternoon from 4pm to 5pm in my office (PDL C-552), starting January 15th (Jan 15, Jan 29, Feb 12, Feb 26).
  • Note: Due to MLK Day on January 15th, office hours have been moved to January 16th from 4pm to 5pm.
  • Note: On February 26th, office hours have been moved from 4:30pm to 5:30pm.
• In Autumn 2023, office hours are every other Monday afternoon from 4pm to 5pm in my office (PDL C-552), starting October 9th (Oct 9, Oct 23, Nov 6, Nov 20, Dec 4).
  • Note: On November 6th, office hours have been moved from 4pm to 5pm.
