I am a 4th year graduate student studying mathematical neuroscience. In particular, I model the response of the auditory nerve to electrical stimulation in order to understand how cochlear implants function and how we can improve clinical outcomes for cochlear implant users. My bachelor's degree was in mathematics from Pomona College in Claremont, CA.

I grew up in Brooklyn before getting my BA from Yale. I also spent a year in Budapest in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program and another year teaching English at a high school in Hungary. Now I'm a first-year graduate student interested in combinatorics and algebra. I spend most of my spare time cooking and going to farmers markets.

Kurt is an ex-software developer and escapee from Silicon Valley. A native of northern California, he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Sonoma State University. After working many years in the software industry, he obtained his Master of Science in Mathematics from California State University, Hayward (not CSU East Bay) before entering the PhD program at UW in 2004. He currently lives with his wife in Lynnwood, WA. He will be finishing his PhD this year. For the next two academic years he will be serving as a postdoc at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in applied mathematics, physics and engineering and came to the University of Washington in the fall of 2004. My research focus is on creating efficient numerical algorithms for hazardous geophysical flows such as tsunamis, landslides, lahars, and other destructive flows.

I am a 5th year doctoral student in the Department of Mathematics, studying algebraic geometry with Sandor Kovacs. My current research involves characterizing projective spaces and hyperquadrics in terms of certain positivity properties of the tangent bundle. I received my BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Rochester, and spent six years in the software industry doing algorithm design work before coming to Seattle. I am originally from Tucson, AZ.

I am a second year graduate student in the Applied Mathematics department. I'm currently studying the theory of passive mode-locking in semiconductor laser arrays as well as the optical intensity dynamics when the array is not in a mode-locked state. Both projects are under the direction of my advisor, Nathan Kutz. Before coming to UW, I grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and attended Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California where I obtained my B.S. in Physics in 2007. Outside of school, I enjoy running (slowly), sleeping, and avoiding the cold.
