Area of Research: Differential Geometry/PDE

I am in my fourth year in the Math Ph.D. program and my interests lie in differential geometry and partial differential equations. Right now I'm reading about asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with my advisor, Jack Lee. Outside of school I enjoy running, hiking, and drinking coffee.

This quarter I'm organizing a second "examples seminar" with Tristram Bogart and Brant Jones targeted mostly at undergraduate students. Please visit my webpage (the link is above) for more information and some cool pictures.

Area of Research: N/A.

I grew up in Palo Alto, California and attended college at Oberlin, majoring in math and minoring in history, and also spending one wonderful semester in Budapest. I'm now in my fourth year in the UW math department, studying combinatorics and computational algebraic geometry under Prof. Rekha Thomas. Along with VIGRE fellows Eric Bahuaud and Brant Jones, I'm running a mathematical examples seminar for undergraduates this year. I enjoy ultimate frisbee, classical music, poker, and exploring the Northwest.

Chris Hanusa

Department: Mathematics

Area of Research: Enumerative Combinatorics

Chris is originally from Pittsburgh. He studied at Harvey Mudd College, graduating in 2001. This is his fourth and final year in the Mathematics Ph.D. program. Upon entering the University of Washington, Chris focused in optimization, studying the traffic assignment problem with R. Tyrrell Rockafellar for his Master degree in June, 2003. In September 2003, Chris started work in enumerative combinatorics with his thesis advisor, Henry Cohn. Since then, Chris has developed a new enumerative method to count cycle systems in hamburger graphs, with applications in counting domino tilings of Aztec Diamonds and other related regions. He is living in Seattle with his wife Audrey Gillant and his friendly cat Casper.

Dylan Helliwell

Department: Mathematics

I am in my seventh year here at UW. I am studying conformal geometry in dimentions greater than two with Robin Graham. Besides doing research, I enjoy teaching math. Outside of acadamia, I practice Shotokan karate, and (when possible) ski or surf.

Before coming to UW, I got my B.S. at Harvey Mudd college, and before that, I grew up in Incline Village (North Lake Tahoe, just on the Nevada side).

William Heuett

Department: Applied Mathematics

Originally from Pueblo, Colorado, I received my BS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. I am currently a 5th year graduate student in the Department of Applied Mathematics. My research interests are in the applications of optimization and stochastic methods to model reaction networks in living cells.

Leah Jager

Department: Statistics

Brant Jones

Department: Mathematics

After graduating from Bard College with a degree in mathematics, I worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers for four years and enjoyed various commercial, academic and artistic scenes in New York City. I moved to Seattle in 2002 to begin my graduate education at the University of Washington, where I presently study algebraic combinatorics with Sara Billey. Recently, I've been hiking the mountain ranges of the Northwest and improvising music.

Kris Kissel

Department: Mathematics

Area of Research: Geometric Measure Theory and Partial Differential Equations

This is my fifth year in the University of Washington's Ph.D. program in Mathematics. I work with Tatiana Toro on free-boundary problems involving Harmonic Measure in n-dimensional Euclidean space. Before this I received my BS and MS degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, where I studied vicosity solutions of partial differential equations with Juan Manfredi. And I am now advising an undergraduate research project in stochastic differential equations.

I really like teaching. Outside of mathematics, I enjoy practicing the martial art Aikido, playing Texas Hold'em Poker, mastering the strategy game Civilization III, watching Pittsburgh Steeler football, playing chess, reading about history, politics and current events, watching `The West Wing', bicycling and hiking.

My goal this year is to backpack the entire Wonderland Trail -- a 96-mile loop around Mount Rainier.

I am a second-year graduate student in the Applied Mathematics department. My application area is Mathematical Biology, and I am beginning to study molecular motors. I completed my masters degree this fall, and I am now working toward my PhD.

I received my B.A. from Macalester College (St. Paul, Minnesota) in 2002, with a double Math and Physics major. Before going to college, I was raised in Tacoma, Washington. I love the Northwest, and I am glad that I no longer have to deal with Minnesota summers or winters. My outside-of-school hobbies include playing soccer, rock climbing, and reading.

Joan Lind

Department: Mathematics

Shortly after my birth in New Jersey I started my journey westward. I was raised near Chicago and then spent my undergraduate years studying mathematics and playing ultimate frisbee at Augustana College, which is situated on the undulating Mississippi river bluffs. After a summer's trek on the Appalacian Trail, I continued west to pursue mathematics and ultimate frisbee in Seattle. Currently, I am a graduate student in UW's mathematics department, working with Steffen Rohde on Loewner's differential equation, a topic at the intersection of complex analysis and stochastic analysis.

Area of Research: Applications of Math

I was born and raised in Seattle, I graduated from UCLA with a degree in applied math and returned to Seattle for graduate school in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington. I am now in my third year of studies working towards my Ph.D in Applied Mathematics.

I was born in Illinois, but grew up mostly on the West Coast. I have been attending the University of Washington for a while now, and hope to attend for a while longer. The coolest thing in the world is my eight-year old son Keegan!

Department: Mathematics

Susan Shortreed

Department: Statistics

I am a fourth year graduate student in the Statistics program. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in statistics in the spring of 2001 and came to Seattle the fall after I graduated. I first became interested in statistics for its applications in the medical sciences and my interest had grown because of its vast range of applications. I have done research in modelling social networks for the purpose of studying HIV transmission and also spent a summer working at RAND studying communication networks. Currently I work with my advisor, Marina Meila, in the area of machine learning and algorithms, specifically related to spectral clustering. Spectral clustering is a technique used for classifying data based on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a similarity matrix.

Outside of statistics, I enjoy rock climbing, ultimate frisbee, shopping and traveling. I am on two ultimate frisbee teams Thunderstats, our dept team, and Element, the UW Women's Ultimate team. I enjoy Seattle, I think the rain is better than the snow or freezing rain of MI and it has a lot to offer, but I hope to some day live in a place where sun is the norm and the temperature rarely drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
