Food Guide

There are two clusters of restaurants close to the UW campus, one along the University Way (known locally as "The Ave" for some unexplained reason), and the second one in the University Village (an open air shopping mall). The two clusters are on the opposite sides of the campus, each within 5 to 10 minute walk (University Village is slightly more distant, the hill between the University Village and the main campus is steeper than on the side of The Ave). See the map at the bottom of this page. The red oval is the University Village. The blue line is The Ave.

Restaurants on The Ave cater to students and so they look appropriately run down, to attract potential customers. The University Village serves those yuppie customers who survived the recent stock market downturn.

The food quality is not much different on both sides. You should expect to spend $10 (including tax and gratuity) on lunch in the University Village, and perhaps a couple of dollars less on The Ave.

Formal restaurants

Some of them require a long walk (but not necessarily a car).

  • Piatti in the University Village. Food quality was somewhat disappointing in the past.
  • Marlai Fine Thai Cuisine (3719 NE 45th St., 206-523-3200). Popular, high quality Thai restaurant close to the University Village.
  • Cedars Restaurant on Brooklyn (4759 Brooklyn Ave NE, 206-527-5247). A very popular Indian and Middle Eastern restaurant. Expect a long wait.
  • Ivar's Salmon House (401 NE Northlake Way, (206) 632-0767). The name says it all. Interior decorated with historical Native American photographs and art. Pricy.

Pubs

  • Big Time Brewery on the Ave.
  • Ram Restaurant and Big Horn Brewery in the University Village.
  • The College Inn Pub on The Ave (4006 University Way N.E.).
There are several pubs on The Ave.

Supermarkets

Two supermarkets are located in the University Village: QFC and Safeway (Safeway is somewhat hard to find - inquire locally).

Another Safeway supermarket is on the the other side of the campus, close to The Ave (4732 Brooklyn Ave NE).
