Brown Bag Teaching/Learning Seminar #6
Debating K-12 "Reform"

The mathematical community nation-wide is currently divided, and to a distressing extent becoming increasingly polarized, over the "Math Reform" at the K-12 level. Another name for it is "Standards-based mathematics". Yet another is "Fuzzy Mathematics"--guess which side came up with that one? Among the bones of contention most loudly growled over are the "Standards-based curricula", designed to replace tradition-bound textbooks and promote thinking and problem-solving skills. Many claims, both valid and in-, have been made by both sides.

Last year Loyce Adams led a bunch of graduate students in a moderately massive study of Everyday Math and Mathland, two of the curricula in question. This Thursday she has kindly agreed to come and talk to us about them (especially Everyday Math) and answer our questions. Come and find out what all the fuss is about!

We will meet at 12:30 (NOTE THE CHANGE IN TIME!!!) on Thursday, Feb. 3 in the Math Lounge. Hope to see you there.
