It's time to launch this year's Teaching/Learning Brown Bag series. I'm
doing it this time with a slight gamble. On Wednesday, I am following up
on some work Tom Duchamp has been doing by attending the Fall Scoring
Conference of the Competency-based Admissions Standards project.
Basically, the question under discussion there will be what constitutes
the minimal level of mathematical literacy that any college student (not
just a future math or science type--ANY student) should achieve, and how
to recognize when a student is indeed at that level. In general, I come
out of any such discussion with a few insights and a whole bunch of issues
I'd like to pursue. On the assumption that this will once again occur, I
am declaring this Thursday's topic to be
