Brown Bag Teaching/Learning Seminar #1
Admissions Standards

It's time to launch this year's Teaching/Learning Brown Bag series. I'm doing it this time with a slight gamble. On Wednesday, I am following up on some work Tom Duchamp has been doing by attending the Fall Scoring Conference of the Competency-based Admissions Standards project. Basically, the question under discussion there will be what constitutes the minimal level of mathematical literacy that any college student (not just a future math or science type--ANY student) should achieve, and how to recognize when a student is indeed at that level. In general, I come out of any such discussion with a few insights and a whole bunch of issues I'd like to pursue. On the assumption that this will once again occur, I am declaring this Thursday's topic to be

Basic Mathematical Competency: what is it?

We will meet in the Math Lounge at 12:30 [Note to old hands: NOT NOON!] Come one, come...anyone interested!
