Brown Bag Teaching/Learning Seminar #2
ANDEE RUBIN FROM TERC

Normally (insofar as there is any normality) Brown Bags are at least two weeks apart. On the other hand, some opportunities are too good to pass up. One such is that this Thursday we will have Andee Rubin from TERC visiting. TERC exists in my scheme of things mostly as the place which has spirited Steve Monk away for two years, so I asked her for a brief description. Her reply was:

TERC is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to improving mathematics and science education. Our work includes curriculum development, software development, basic research on teaching and learning, teacher development, school reform, technology integration, and school to work studies. TERC USED TO stand for Technical Education Research Centers. We are no long only doing technical education, so the name is not very relevant any more...but we don't have a more up-to-date acronym.
So I asked her if she would like to tell us all about TERC at the Brown Bag and she replied
I'd like to talk about the TERC Investigations curriculum - talking about everything TERC does would take a LONG time. I could tell about its general philosophy and how it's organized and show one unit. And maybe do one activity...

The activity will be one with snap cubes (kindly loaned by the College of Education) and the Brown Bag should be a lot of fun. It will, as always (that piece of normality does hold) be in the Math Lounge at noon on Thursday October 17.
