Brown Bag Teaching/Learning Seminar #8
David Pengelley on Alternative forms of Assessment

At the last Brown Bag of '95 we launched a topic that got cut short by the ending of the hour. In particular, David Pengelley had just dangled some really interesting possibilities for assessing student learning without the "Stop the world, I want to get off" element inherent in the midterm system. Sounded great, so before disbanding we marked the chapter "to be continued."

That was a cool two months ago, but we are indeed now ready to continue it. David has agreed to tell us about some of his tactics, including student portfolios, topic essays, daily student log/diaries, student writing about text reading, and student projects or theme assignments, all of which have the virtue that they keep the focus on learning while allowing assessment.

After which we can discuss also whatever anyone else has tried (successful or otherwise!)

We will meet on Thursday, Feb.8, at noon in the Math Lounge
