Announcements:
- Here are some suggestions for other books to look at.
- G. E. Bredon, Topology and Geometry. Nice
book, has more on manifolds and less on homotopy theory,
compared to Hatcher's book.
- J. R. Munkres, Elements of Algebraic Topology.
Covers homology and cohomology very thoroughly.
- J. P. May, A Concise Course in Algebraic
Topology. The topics and presentation are
interesting, but at a fairly high level.
- E. H. Spanier, Algebraic Topology. One of
the standard references in the field, but many people find
it hard to read.
Reading
- Section 2.1
- Section 2.2
- The rest of Chapter 2
- Section 3.1
Homework:
- Due Wednesday, October 22: page 131: 11, 20, and also
do any one of: 16, 17, 18, or 19. You might look at 26, also.
- Due Wednesday, November 19: do any three problems from
Section 2.2. (When I taught this course a number of years
ago, I suggested problems 8, 9, 12, 15, 16, 20, 21, 24, 25,
26, 36, 40, 41, or 43.)
