Don't use the following symbols in "formal mathematical writing", like homework assignments: use words instead. If you do use them in a homework assigment, you may get no credit for that assignment.
You may use them when there are time constraints, or in any informal situation: doing an exam, presenting a problem at the board, taking notes, etc.
