Here are some other algebra books. Take a look at these if you
don't like the approach in our book. Click on the catalog number to
look the book up in the UW library catalog.
- Herstein, Abstract Algebra. On reserve in the
math library, catalog number
QA162.H47 1990.
- Rotman, A First Course in Abstract Algebra. On
reserve in the math library, catalog number
QA162.R68 2000.
- Gallian, Contemporary Abstract Algebra. I think
this is more basic than the other books listed here. Has
exercises with solutions. Catalog number
QA162.G34 1986.
- Fraleigh, A First Course in Abstract Algebra.
Also more slowly paced than Artin's book. Catalog number
QA266.F7.
- Hillman and Alexanderson, Abstract Algebra, A First
Undergraduate Course. Catalog number
QA162.H54 1993.
Here are some books on writing mathematics. The first of these is
on reserve, and the others are available in the reference section
of the math library.
- Knuth, Larrabee, and Roberts, Mathematical
Writing. I will be assigning some reading from this
during the year. On reserve, catalog number
QA42.K58 1981.
- Steenrod, Halmos, Schiffer, Dieudonné, How to
Write Mathematics. This has one article by each
author, and the one by Halmos is a classic. I will probably
assign it for reading at some point. In the reference
section, catalog number
QA41.H6 1981.
- Gillman, Writing Mathematics Well. In the
reference section, catalog number
QA42.G45 1987.
- Higham, Handbook of Writing for the Mathematical
Sciences. I think this book is too long. In the
reference section, catalog number
QA42.H54 1998.
- Krantz, A Primer of Mathematical Writing. Perhaps
more useful for more advanced writing (papers rather than
homework solutions). In the reference section, catalog number
QA42.K73 1997.
