Announcements:
- Here are some suggestions for other books to look at. If
you want me to, I can put them on reserve in the library.
- G. E. Bredon, Topology and Geometry. Nice
book, has more on manifolds and less on homotopy theory,
compared to Hatcher's book.
- J. R. Munkres, Elements of Algebraic Topology.
Covers homology and cohomology very thoroughly.
- J. P. May, A Concise Course in Algebraic
Topology. The topics and presentation are
interesting, but at a fairly high level.
- E. H. Spanier, Algebraic Topology. One of
the standard references in the field, but many people find
it hard to read.
Homework:
- Start reading Chapter 2. Starting on Wednesday, September
27, I'll be discussing delta complexes and simplicial
homology, pages 102-107.
- Due Friday, October 6: page 131: do 1, do 4 or 5,
and do 7 or 8 or 9.
- Due Friday, October 20: page 132: 11, 16, 20. Other
interesting problems: 14, 18, 19, 21.
- In the next week or two: try to figure out what a CW
complex is.
- Due Friday, November 17: do three of these problems: page
155: 8, 9, 12, 15, 16, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 36, 40, 41, 43. Or
if there are others from those pages that catch your eye, and
if they're not trivial, you can do those instead.
