Stipends

Stipends for teachers are now available for three NWMI courses this summer. The stipends are provided as part of the work of the Mathematics Content Collaboration Communities (or MC3 for short). This is a Washington State Math Science Partnership program. The goals and nature of MC3 are described further below. To sign up for a stipend, read the conditions below and then go to the relevant on-line form below to sign up.

Here are the requirements to be eligible for a stipend.

  1. The participant must be a full-time secondary math teacher in the state of Washington for 2009-2010.
  2. The participant will participate for all the days of the program, arriving and leaving on time.
  3. Participants will sign a release for video and audio taping (for the math education research component of MC3). This release will be available for signing at registration.
  4. Since Math Science Partnerships are required to provide additional hours or professional development during the academic year, participants will agree to make a good effort to attend additional sessions.
  5. Participants will sign an agreement that they understand and agree to these conditions.

Answers to Questions

Question: Why do some programs require a registration fee and others not?
Answer: When additional funding appeared at a late date, we were able to add stipends to the Summer Geometry Institute and the Partitions course. But since enrollment had already begun, it was decided to keep the registration fee, but total stipend is a bit morefor these courses in compensation. (If we were starting again from scratch, we no doubt would do this differently.)

Question: When will be stipends be paid?
Answer: The UW will be requested to issue stipend checks for participants immediately when the program is over. Normally, it may take two or three weeks to receive the checks.

Question: What happens to the stipend if I come late or miss a day?
Answer: We run a friendly and informal program, but any teacher will understand that late arrivals, early departures, and absences would be a distraction and have negative impact on the class as a whole and on other participants. So we expect for participants to be in the classroom at 8:30 AM ready to start. We reserve the option to round down hours of participation in one day to a whole number; and a day of absence will reduce the stipend by 25%. (Truly unavoidable emergencies can be discussed with the management!)

Question: What if I am late the first day because I don't know the UW campus, parking lots, etc?
Answer: We encourage everyone to come to the Sunday evening orientation. It is an enjoyable math experience, and you will be well-oriented for the coming week.

Question: Will I be required to attend additional sessions during the academic year?
Answer: MC3 is required as a Math Science Partnership to offer 40 hours of additional sessions. We will try to offer them at convenient times, and we hope that you will want to come. But we cannot enforce any requirement that you come.
