Northwest Mathematics Interaction

Numbers! From Common Divisors to Cryptography
July 30 - August 3, 2007

( Sunday evening July 29 optional but strongly recommended)

Math Content of this Course

In this Park City style non-lecture course, participants will explore many areas of number theory, from K-12 topics such as the division algorithm for numbers and polynomials to current applications including RSA encryption. Along the way, we'll work with difference tables, modular arithmetic, and continued fractions, and see mathematics from Euclid, Diophantus, Fermat, and Gauss.

Come create mathematical connections between topics you teach and major contemporary applications.

Format of Park City Math Courses

The IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute offers a renowned series of problem-based math courses for teachers in Utah each summer. These courses are notable in that they are based on teachers doing math problems together at tables and that they start at very basic math and end up in surprising and beatiful results.

The NWMI course is based on one of these Park City courses. The instructor, Brian Hopkins has served as instructor and table leader for the course in Park City, as well as teaching at NWMI for many summer.
