NWMI Investigations Math Minicourses

The minicourses will be taught on the University of Washington campus in Seattle. Each session offers one choice from one or two concurrent courses.

These Investigations Minicourses are offered during the week of the NWMI Summer Geometry Institute. Each minicourse lasts for two days, going deeply into a single subject. The first day includes an evening program shared among the teachers in all the NWMI programs.

TARGETED AUDIENCE

High School and Middle School Teachers who wish to delve deeply into a math topic in a supportive collegial environment.

WHAT ARE THE COURSES LIKE?

Like all NWMI programs, the minicourses blend practical hands-on activity with reflection about math content. You will feel confident to use this math in your classroom. Each course is taught by a team of a college teacher and a high school teacher. The courses are in alignment with the NCTM Standards and the Washington Essential Learnings. Lodging on campus is included. You are encouraged to stay on campus at night and think math instead of traffic!

WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE

• 13 Hours of Instruction
• Sharing Time with Teachers
• Notebook containing activities
• Breakfast and Lunch
• Housing on campus (1 night for one course, 3 nights for 2 courses)

SCHEDULE

• Each day: 8:30-4:30 (one hour for lunch)

After-Dinner Math

• This is an optional program of math activity and enrichment open to all NWMI programs, 7:30-9:30. Clock hours for this time can be included with the clock hours from the regular schedule.

  • Seattle Public School Teachers: $0.
  • Other Washington teachers (lodging included): $125 per course before June 15. $150 after June 15.
  • Out-of-state teachers (lodging extra): Same fees but lodging is extra. See the Cost Table.

CREDITS AND CLOCK HOURS [Link to Credit and Clock Hour Table]

Applications for credit or clock hours will be made on site when you arrive; be sure to bring your checkbook for clock hours.

• Or, clock hours will available at $2.00 per clock hour. Additional hours spent at the optional After-Dinner Math can be included. Payment can be made by check but not credit card.
• UW credit is available for minicourses if an activity at After-Dinner Math is included. Details on request. One UW credit of Math 498 for one course or two UW credits of Math 497 for two courses will be available for the additional cost of $163. Total cost is the same for either one or two courses. Payment can be made by credit card or check.
