NWMI SUMMER WORKSHOP CONTENTS
This workshop will include many exciting ideas for teaching geometry
and visual mathematics in line with the recommendations of the
Standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Most of the contents of the workshop will be based on the acclaimed
WOODROW WILSON TORCH workshops which have been taught at
many locations around the country; this part of the workshop will be led
by an experienced Woodrow Wilson Geometry Team of high school
teachers.
The other parts of the workshop will be based on the four years
experience of the PARK CITY MATHEMATICS INSTITUTE and will be
taught by the teachers from the Seattle Site of the PCMI. The
combination of these two dynamic groups will make for an exciting
experience for mathematics teachers.
Topics will be taught in a participatory manner and will include
- hands-on methods and physical models for 2D and 3D
- discovery and group learning
- projects and connections with other math and other disciplines
- technology, including calculators and computer software such as
Geometer's Sketchpad, videos and Internet resources
NWMI SUMMER WORKSHOP DETAILS
- The workshop will be held on the University of Washington
campus, from 8:30 a.m., Monday, August 7, until 3:00 p.m., Friday,
August 11, 1995.

There is an additional fee for UW credit.
- Applications are due by April 5. Notifications of acceptance
will be mailed April 15.
ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAM
The NWMI Geometry program begins with the summer workshop but
continues throughout the academic year 1995-96. Participation in this
program of support will help carry the excitement from the workshop to
the classroom.
- Participating teachers will form local teams and meet to share
experiences and strategies with colleagues from their own or nearby
schools.
- Support, communication and resources will be available over the
Internet.
- The local teams can draw on the whole group if they wish to
organize in-service activities in their schools.
- The whole group of NWMI teachers will share experiences at two
general meetings, one in the fall and one in the spring.
- It is expected that some of the 1995-96 NWMI participants will
continue as leaders for the 1996-97 NWMI program.
WHAT IS THE NWMI and THE PCMI?
The Northwest Math Interaction (NWMI) is an effort of the Continuing
Outreach Program of the IAS /Park City Mathematics Institute. The
PCMI sponsors a summer institute in Park City, Utah for teachers,
university mathematicians and undergraduates.
The NWMI is made up of Puget Sound secondary teachers who have
completed the two-year geometry program at Park City and who are
introducing new ways of teaching geometry in the classroom.
The NWMI is sponsored by the University of Washington Mathematics
Department, which provides some mathematical and technical support.
WHAT IS THE WOODROW WILSON FOUNDATION?
The Woodrow Wilson Foundation sponsors summer programs for
teachers in Princeton, New Jersey. From the teachers in the summer
programs, some teachers are picked for teams which lead the outreach
TORCH workshops. The Woodrow Wilson Geometry Team which will be
teaching at the NWMI workshop is a dynamic group with a great deal of
experience in leading workshops.
