Sequencing Algebra 1 Topics

Clint Chan, Lynnwood HS (45 minutes)

Clint will present some ideas about how his math department is sequencing Algebra 1 topics to place concepts in a more mathematical context, while hitting the standards in a timely manner for the End-of-Course exams. We’ll try some problems that the first unit was built around and discuss how collaboration happens in his department.

M.C. Escher’s Alhambra

Joyce Frost, LWSD retired/math tutor (45 minutes)

Experience M.C. Escher’s Alhambra through pictures and stories.

Seek And Ye Shall Find: Discovery In Mathematics

Bob Stein, California State University San Bernardino (75 minutes)

Teaching mathematics through exploration may seem to contradict the set curricular goals that we often face (e.g. in "standards."). We will discuss how to reconcile the apparent differences and enrich students' mathematical experiences. We will illustrate with explorations involving geometry and number theory suitable for secondary school classrooms.

LUNCH (12:00 – 1:00)

Afternoon Session: 1:00 pm4:00 pm

Cut Scores And The New EOC – Who Did This To Us And What Could They Have Been Thinking?

Art Mabbott, Seattle Public Schools Math Coach (60 minutes)

Art was part of the team of teachers from across the state of Washington who spent time this summer setting the cut scores for the first Algebra and Geometry End of Course Exams. He will share some of the process and some of the thinking involved in setting these scores.

I Only Twitter With Math Teachers

Ashli Black, Mountlake Terrace HS (45 minutes)

Looking for ideas to develop that lesson that just isn't coming together? Looking to commiserate on hard days? Or perhaps just chat with fellow math geeks? This session is about how I use twitter & blogging to communicate with the best faculty group I could ask for and keep myself accountable to my peers across the nation (and beyond!).

The Cube Made Interesting -- including Puzzles (60 minutes)

Jim King, University of Washington Math Department

The Cube Made Interesting is the title of a book that points out many fascinating properties of the cube: including the solids and polygons that it contains, its symmetries, and its higher-dimensional generalizations. We will enjoy looking at some of the shapes lurking in the cube, including playing with the wonderfully tactile 3D cube dissection puzzles from Stokes Publishing.
