Program

Local Hosts: Matt Bracher, Joyce Frost

9:00 - 12:00 Morning Program

  • 9:00-9:45: YouTube is Hot! How Can We Harness this Resource in the Classroom?
There are a number of good math-related clips available to use, collect, and bookmark. Play-lists and web pages help organize your options. For example, check out: http://youtube.com/user/dicktermes
--Joe Frost, U. of W. Medical Centers
  • 9:45 - 10:45: Investigating Addition with Games
Games are a great way to teach addition, from basic facts to mental math ideas, to problem solving. Experience this in 2 - 3 games for grades K - 5 and see what implications it has for Middle School and beyond. Come ready for a lively discussion!
--Traci Ostrick, Elementary Math Coach, Everett School District
  • 10:45 - 11:00 Break
  • 11:00 - 12:00: Math Brochures and Boxes: for Projects and Publicity
There are many more ways to present information than a flat sheet of paper.
Try tetra-flexagons, folding booklets, and unusual boxes to showcase your program or students' work.
-- Joyce Frost, Finn Hill Junior High Math Coach
  • 12:00 - 1:00 Lunch (no host, but let's eat together!)
  • 1:00 - 2:30: What's So Inspiring About the New TI Nspire?
Word Documents, Spreadsheets, Cabri Geometry, Lesson Plans and More!
    You'll be a believer.
-- Art Mabbott, Math Coach, Madison Middle School, Seattle Public Schools
  • 2:30 - 2:45 Break
  • 2:45 - 4:00: Tooling up in Sketchpad: Focus on nets for Obliques
Arduous 3-dimensional distance and trigonometric calculations reduce to sublimely easy-to-do 2-dimensional calculations and constructions carried out with three simple tools you create in Geometer's Sketchpad. This is followed by some transformations to attach the net at the lateral edges. The process will start with a prism (base of your choice). Pyramids use one of the tools--even easier to do. Resulting nets are dynamic!
--David Espenshade, Olympic High School, Central Kitsap School District
--Bring a jump drive or CD to save your nets (patterns).
