New Geometer's Sketchpad 4.0: Jim King

The new version of Sketchpad has many new features and a new look and feel. See examples showing the powerful new graphing, the custom tools, and the multipage documents. Then we will convert an example into an interactive web page!

Music and Math: Ronda Webber and Will Webber

Music and math are connected from the very basics of counting and rhythms to the more complexness of waves and sounds. This session will start with time meters and go through the mathematics of sound waves. We will touch upon counting, fractions, frequencies, waves, and more. No prior music knowledge is required. However, if you have an instrument please bring it with you.

Getting to Know Gnomons: Karen Hall

We'll examine the construction and applications of spiral growth from the viewpoint of gnomons. A gnomon (pronounced know-man) to figure A is a connected figure which when suitably attached to A produces a new figure which is similar to A. Applications will include the golden triangle and golden rectangle

Math in the Middle Years (4-8): Joyce Frost and Michael Naylor

This presentation will preview a 15-hour summer minicourse called Making Sense of Manipulatives in the K-8 Classroom that will be offered for the first time in the NWMI Summer 2002 Program. In the course one will learn to make effective use of manipulatives to build geometry, number sense, measurement, and fraction concepts.
