MMC 2014-2015 Email Updates

September 22, 2014

Hello Parents!

My name is Mikaela Hertel, I'm a recent UW grad and one of the teachers of Montlake Math Challenge. As Montlake Math Challenge begins it's year tomorrow, I thought I'd send you all an email with some details. As to tomorrow, send your students with a pencil and an open mind ready to learn math.

This will be an exciting year, and we look forward to getting to know all of your children. Every week after class, I will email out an update about what we did in class, and attach the homework. It will also be posted on our website, found here: http://www.math.washington.edu/~mathcircle/mmc/mmc.html

Also this year, we will be preparing for and attending the Math is Cool Competition on April 17th. This will be optional but highly encouraged for MMC students. The competition is fun, and last year one of our students placed! More information on the competition can be found here: http://www.academicsarecool.com

Tomorrow in class, we will be asking the students to sign a code of conduct, which will have the following rules:
1) Try your hardest
2) Treat others how you would like to be treated
3) No distracting food
4) Leave the room cleaner than you found it
5) Wait your turn
If a student seriously violates these rules, we will email their parents. On the third email, we will ask the student to leave the class permanently. Hopefully this does not happen though!

Every week, we will send home 1 homework problem and 1 challenge problem, which can also be found on the website. Please help your student with the problems, but let them do the work. We expect the homework problem to be done for the next class, though the challenge problem will be optional.

If you ever have any questions, feel free to email me, and I will do my best to get back to you quickly. Alexa and I look forward to working with your students this year!

Sincerely,
Mikaela Hertel
