Math 324: About the Textbook

Beginning in Autumn Quarter 2003, all sections of Mathematics 124, 125, 126, and 324 at the University of Washington use the 5th Edition of Stewart's Calculus - Early Transcendentals. This book is available in three versions:

The book [CET] contains all the material that is covered in Math 124/125/126/324; while [SVCET] contains only the first two-thirds of that material (the contents of 124, 125, and part of 126), and [MVCET] contains the last third (part of 126 and 324).

The text for Math 324 is [MVCET]. But if you'd like to have the single-variable material for reference, you can buy [CET] instead, because it contains [MVCET] as a subset. Of course, [SVCET] is not appropriate for 324.

If you already own the 4th edition of [CET], you can use it with this course. As far as we can tell, the text of the 4th edition is essentially identical with that of the 5th edition (although the pagination has changed). However, the homework problems in the 5th edition are completely different. In order to accommodate students who have already purchased the 4th edition, for this year only, Brooks-Cole has agreed to make the 5th edition homework problems available on the web to students taking this course. If you are using the 4th edition of [CET], you will need to go to the following web page to download the 5th edition problems:

Non-ET versions of Stewart's Calculus: Brooks-Cole also publishes a regular Calculus series without the "Early Transcendentals" subtitle:

These non-ET books (regardless of edition) are not acceptable for calculus courses at the University of Washington.
