Math 126B
Information About Midterm Test #2
Monday, May 8
NOTE: Between 10:20 and 10:30, before the test begins, I will put
a test on every desk in the lecture room. Please do not take a seat
before there is a test on each seat. Thanks-it will make for less
confusion.
- You may use two 8.5" by 11" one-sided pages (or one sheet
written on both sides) of your own handwritten notes (no
photocopied or printed material).
SHOW YOUR WORK. You may also bring a small model
of an xyz-system to the test.
- No Calculators.
The test will be written so that you
won't need them.
- Use the boxes for answers when possible. Measurements must be made with
a ruler, and lines and vectors must be drawn with a ruler. Lines or
vectors drawn without a ruler lose 4 points.
- There are five problems for a total of 100 points.
- Tests with wrong or incorrectly spelled TA names or section letters
will lose 4 points.
- You may leave complex algebraic expressions as they are, without
simplifying. Simplify numerical expressions to the point where they could
be evaluated with a simple calculator.
- If you have a question during the test, raise your hand and I will
come to your seat.
The test will cover the following topics from [LN]
Sections 12-18:
- Functions of two variables (level objects, gradient, graph,
directional derivatives; Sections 12, 15, 16): 2 problems.
- Functions of three variables (level objects, gradient,
directional derivatives; Sections 13 and 18): 2 problems.
- Linear approximation of f(x,y) (Section 17): 1 problem.
Professor Lee will have additional
office hours before the test as follows:
Friday, May 5, 2:30-4:00 (PDL C-546)
Both TA's will have additional office hours to be announced in section.
There will be no office hours
on Monday, May 8 or Tuesday, May 9. The regular schedule
will resume on Wednesday, May 10.
Preparing for Test 2
Remember-this test is on Sections 12-18. The sample test in
the lecture notes has no problems on Section 18 material; ours will.
Have you compared your crib sheet with those of your friends? What do
they put on it? Why? What did you put on yours? Why?

Some of these problems also appear on homework assignments. This is
only a sample of review problems. ``T2'' means Sample Test 2 in the
Notes.
