Geometry--Flat and Spherical

Instructor: Virginia Warfield

Department of Mathematics, University of Washington, Seattle, WA

Geometry can be approached in a lot of ways (from many angles?) In this course we shall be Experiencing it: our text will be Experiencing Geometry on Plane and Sphere, by David W. Henderson. We will also be reading Flatland, a classic Victorian novel by Edwin Abbott, and Sphereland, a 1960 sequel by Dionys Burger. The class will be in seminar format, with emphasis on problem solving, discussion, hands-on geometrical challenges and group projects.
