Math 445 EMAIL LIST

We have set up an email list for Math 445 and 487. The list is accessible to everyone with email, on campus or at home.

The purpose of the list is to provide a means for communicating among the class using email. This means student-to-student and student-to-instructor communication and not just instructor-to-student (though that will be handy).

When you subscribe, you will automatically receive all messages posted to the list. If you send email to the list, you will automatically send it to everyone (at least everyone who has subscribed) without having to know and type in addresses for everyone.

Also, PLEASE READ the "TOP 3" LIST FOR LISTS at the end of the message. It will spare you the few rookie mistakes that one can make with these lists. (But don't let a fear of mistakes keep you from jumping in; you are among friends on this list.)

HOW TO SIGN UP

If you have email, you can get on this list by sending a single email message.

1. To sign up, either use the web or send an email.

• To use the web, use the URL www.ms.washington.edu/math487/winter01/classmail/subscribe.html

• To use email, send an ordinary email message to the address:

  math487-request@ms.washington.edu

The message should have a subject line which says:

subscribe

The message need have no contents (in fact, please avoid sending a fancy computer signature in this subscribe message; it might confuse the computer). That's all. The sign-up will be handled by an automated process and you will receive a couple of messages in reply to show that you are signed up. One of the messages will explain how to unsubscribe. Please save it!

HOW TO SEND EMAIL TO THE LIST

In order to send e-mail to the list, address your message to:

math487@ms.washington.edu

Your email message will go to everyone on the list without having to know everyone's email. When anyone else sends a message to the list, you will receive it. You can also retrieve old messages by a method that is explained in the introductory email.

HOW TO GET OFF THE LIST

Follow exactly the same procedure described for getting on the list, except that the subject line of the email message should read

unsubscribe

Send the email message to the address:

math487-request@ms.washington.edu

Be sure to send the message to the address math487-request and not math497. The latter will be read by everyone on the list, but it won't get you off.

TOP 3 LIST FOR LISTS

1. TWO ADDRESSES. Remember there are TWO addresses for the list. One is for posting messages to the group (math487@ms.washington.edu), and one is for business, such as subscribing and unsubscribing, retrieving old messages (math487-request@ms.washington.edu). Sending an unsubscribe message to the wrong address merely sends it to everyone to read, it does not unsubscribe you.
2. SAVE THE WELCOME MESSAGE. When you subscribe, you will receive a message back from the software robot that runs the list which tells you how to do several things, such as getting old messages (which you will probably want to do when you first sign up, so as not to miss anything) and HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE.

   It is very important that you SAVE THIS MESSAGE. Because when you want to unsubscribe, you will need this info (even if you love the list, you will want to unsubscribe if you change email address or if you go on vacation or if your system will be down during the summer). I suggest that you create a mailbox on your system for storing Math 445 messages that you want to keep, and then save this welcome message as the first one.

3. PAY ATTENTION TO ADDRESSES ON REPLIES. Most email systems let you either reply to the sender or to all the addressees of a message. Notice by reading the message header whether your reply is going just to the sender or to whole list and adjust it to be the one you want.
