Today's class is brought to you by the Frieze
patterns and Wallpaper patterns |
Topics |
When translations
are symmetries. Combining rotations and mirrors. Examples with p4 centers.
Escher. |
Class Schedule |
- Composing rotations
- Special rotations (e.g., B180A90 = C270) given special triangles (e.g.,
ABC is an isosceles right triangle).
- Find Patterns of rotation centers in tessellations by equilateral
triangles, squares and regular hexagons.
- Find the same patterns in other wallpaper designs, such as Escher
prints. For example the centers of 90 degree rotation form two interlocking
sets of squares, with 180-degree centers located to form isosceles right
triangles. This
print was analyzed in class.
- See why the patterns are forced by the rules of rotation composition.
- Escher and the geometry of repeating patterns.
