Assignment 6B (due Monday, 11/10)
This is a short assignment to squeeze some more learning from the group assignment
4A. The goal is to learn to write better proofs after learning how to write
correct proofs. The goal is correctness first, but then logical clarity, reduced
redundancy, and good readable style.
Problem 6.3 (Please read ALL the instructions carefully and do not jump
to conclusions.)
- This is an individual assignment, but you will need to coordinate with your
group at the beginning. The assignment is that each person on the team will
take one of the group's answer pages with one of the steps from the group
assignment, revise it, and turn it in, along with the original page.
- The original version does NOT have to have an error. It just may be way
too long or unclear. In fact (see below) at least one of the chosen pages
should not have an error.
- How to choose pages -- this is a little tricky.
- If there were some pages with errors, at least one page with an error
should be revised.
- Regardless of the number of errors, one of the pages without errors
should be revised.
- The others can either be error-correcting or style-improving, but there
should be no duplication of pages within the group.
Style Improvement
- The most important style improvement is to avoid repeating two, three or
more times the same logical argument. Instead revise the logic and the way
it is written so that one logical argument is written one time. There will
be a couple of examples on the we to study. You can also ask instructors for
hints.
- The other important style points are being very clear what is given and
what is to be proved. Also, give some clues, subheads, grouping or other tactics
to make the text readable.
- The paper should be wordprocessed. We may ask for electronic submission
as well as printout. You can paste GSP figures into the document if desirable
for a good, readable proof.
- None of the proofs in assignment 4A should take much more than a half-page
to do. If you think more is needed, consult with someone to make sure.
