Math 308 H: Assignment 1, Due Wed.  1/11 at beginning of class

All the Sections referred to below are from Johnson-Riess Arnold, 5th edition.  If you do not have this edition, the problems are also found as scans on the Catalyst Workspace for the course.

á          PRINT your name legibly at the top

á          Label the problems clearly so that the grader can find them.

á          Show your work (even if you check answers with a calculator or the back of the book).

á          Write the total number of problems worked at the top of the page (see above)

á          Staple the pages (buy a little stapler if you donÕt have one).

Section 1.1: Problems #10, 16, 21, 35

Section 1.2: #17, 19, 21, 24, 29, 30 (use matrices for 29 and 30), 37, 47 (for this one, convert B to C by a series of row operations)

Section 1.3: #1, 2, 4, 24, 25 (give a short but clear reason for (b))

Problem A:  Find an equation of the circle in the (x, y) plane that passes through the three points (2, 5), (6, 3), (-1,-4). 

Hint for Problem A: Study examples 8 and 9 in Sec 1.3. 
An equation of a circle is of the form x2 + y2 + ax + by + c = 0.
