Assignment for Week 11/27-12/1
Reading:
- Read Section 4.8, pp. 340-344 for discussion of math in Experiments from
Assignment 7B.
- Read Section 4.2 and most of 4.3 for what will be presented in class on
11/27.
- Read rest of Section 4.3 and all of 4.4 for what will be presented in class
on 11/29.
- For material to be discussed in class Friday, 12/1: Section 4.5
Assignment to do but not turn in (may check on this in class)
Due Wed 11/29
- Section 4.1: 19 (great final exam question)
- Section 4.2: 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19 (know how to use cofactors to compute
determinants by Wed class; any observations about a general pattern from 15
and 16?)
Due Fri 12/1
- Section 4.4, # 1, 3, 7, 11 (by Friday 12/1)
Written Assignment 8 (Due Wed 11/29)
- Section 4.1: Problems # 4, 8, 17 (pay special attention to the differences
between 4 and 8).
- Section 4.2: Problems: # 22, 31
- Section 4.8 Problems # 8, 11
Extra Assignment from Experiments 7B (extra, due Friday 12/1)
Pick one of the matrices that you chose for your experiment in 7B and analyze
the results theoretically.
- Specifically, find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrix.
- If there is a basis of eigenvectors, compute the values in your experiment
(especially the 10th power) using the eigenvalues as in class or as in the
reading in 4.8, page 342.
- If there is no basis of eigenvectors (or if the basis is complex and you
don't want to face them), choose a different matrix and do the analysis for
that matrix.
