Assignments and Announcements for Math 124E and F

September 29: We did a problem involving parametric equations (see Section 10.1 of Stewart or the Supplementary Reading on the Math 124 Materials website) and got most of the way through Section 2.1. You should now be able to do all of the HW1 Webassign problems and all of the HW2 Webassign problems except for Problem 5. On Monday we will finish Sections 2.1 and 2.2 and begin 2.3. (Please note: You only get one try for the second part of Problem 3 on Webassign HW1. Normally you get one try for multiple choice or true-false questions and up to 5 tries for the others.)

October2: We finished Sections 2.1 and 2.2 today. You should now be able to do all of the Webassign problems due Thursday. On Wednesday, we will cover Section 2.3 and begin Section 2.5. We will not be covering Section 2.4.

October 4: We covered Section 2.3 today, and you should now be able to do all of the HW4 Webassign problems, except for #12. (Please note that you only get 2 tries for the last four parts of #7, the first two parts of #8, and the first 6 parts of #9.) On Friday, we will discuss Section 2.5 and begin 2.6. Please note: I will be away on Friday so there will be no office hours on that day (and there will be a substitute instructor).

October 9:: We covered Section 2.6 today, and you should now be able to do all of the HW4 and HW5 Webassign problems. On Wednesday, we will discuss Section 2.7 and possibly begin 2.8.

October 11: We covered Section 2.7 and began 2.8 today. You should now be able to do all of your HW6 and HW7 Webassign problems. On Friday we will finish Section 2.8 and perhaps move on to 3.1.

October 13: I pretty much finished what I wanted to say about Section 2.8. You should now be able to do all the problems in HW8 of Webassign. (You get two tries for each of the parts in #1 of HW8 but only one try for the other multiple answer questions.) On Monday we will move on to Section 3.1.

October 16: We finished Section 3.1 and began 3.2, covering enough so that you should now be able to do Problems 1-14, 18, 20, and 24 on Webassign HW9. On Wednesday, we will finish 3.2 and move on to Section 3.3.

October 18: The midterm on Tuesday, Oct. 24 will cover up through Section 3.3. You are allowed one two-sided handwritten 8.5 x 11 inch page of notes as well as a Ti-30x IIS calculator.

In class today, we finished Section 3.2 and got most of the way through 3.3. Even though we didn't finish 3.3, you are now able to do all of your Webassign HW9 and HW10 problems. On Friday, we will finish Section 3.3 and discuss sinusoidal functions, which are covered in the Week 4 supplemental reading (see the Math 124 Materials Website).

October 20: We finished Section 3.3 and covered sinusoidal functions. We then began Section 3.4; you may not, however, use the chain rule on the midterm. On Monday, we will do some review.

October 25: We discussed the Chain Rule (Section 3.4) some more, and you should now be able to do all of the Webassign HW11 and HW12 problems. (Some of these problems are just harder problems involving differentiation and don't require the chain rule. In addition, please note: I have made parts b and f of #11 HW12 worth zero points because they are trivial and parts c and d of that same problem worth zero points because the issue involved is more subtle than the answers indicate.) You are now also able to do Problems 11 and 12 of HW13. On Friday, we will do a little more with the chain rule and then discuss how it can be used to compute tangent lines to parametrized curves (Section 10.2).

October 27: We discussed finding tangent lines to parametrized curves. This material appears in the first couple of pages of Section 10.2 in your text. You now are able to do all of the remaining HW13 problems, although you may wish to wait until Monday when we do some examples. We will also begin Section 3.5 on implicit differentiation on Monday.

October 30: We finished our discussion of tangent lines of parametrized curves, You are now able to do all of the homework due tomorrow and Thursday. We then began Section 3.5 and will continue with that on Wednesday.

We will not be doing the worksheet in quiz section tomorrow, but will likely be doing part of it on Thursday.

November 1: We finished Section 3.5 and began 3.6. You should now be able to do all problems on Webassign HW14 and Problems 1-16 on Webassign HW15. Please note that HW15 includes problems from Section 3.6 and that Problem 13f on HW15 is worth 0 points, since you don't know how to do it yet. On Friday we will finish Section 3.6.

Please bring the Week 6 Worksheet to quiz section tomorrow,

November 3: We finished Section 3.6, and you should now be able to do all of the Webassign homework due 11/7. On Monday, we will begin Section 3.9 on related rates problems. Sections 3.7 and 3.8 will not be covered in this course.

November 6: We began discussing related rates problems. You now know enough to do all of your Webassign HW16 and HW17, but you will get some more practice with related rates tomorrow in quiz section. I will also do at least one more related rates problem on Wednesday, before moving on to Section 3.10.

November 8: We finished our discussion of related rates and will move on to Section 3.10 on Monday. I have posted Webassign HW18 on this section; please note that I have made #8 worth 0 points. This is because you will not know enough from this course to really understand it.

November 13: We discussed Section 3.10 on the tangent line approximation today, and you should now be able to do all of your Webassign HW18. On Wednesday, we will move on to Section 4.1.

November 15: We covered Section 4.1, and you are now able to do all of your Webassign HW19 and HW20 with the exception of the last HW20 problem. On Friday, we will discuss Section 4.3. We will not be covering Section 4.2 in this course.

November 17: We covered most of Section 4.3, and you should be able to finish your Webassign HW20. The midterm on Tuesday, November 21 will cover up through Section 4.1. As with Midterm 1, you are allowed one handwritten two-sided 8.5 x 11 inch page of notes and a Ti-30x IIS calculator.

November 22: We finished Section 4.3, and you should now be able to do Webassign HW21. On Monday, we will move on to Section 4.4 on l'Hospital's rule.

November 27: We began Section 4.4 and will finish it on Wednesday. We will then discuss Section 4.5.

November 29: We finished Sections 4.4 and 4.5 today. You should now be able to do all of the Webassign HW22 and HW23 problems. On Friday, we will begin Section 4.7 on optimization problems.

December 1: We discussed Section 4.7 and will do some more examples on Monday. You should now be able to attempt all of your Webassign HW24 problems.

December 6: The Final Exam is on Saturday, December 9 from 1:30-4:20 with the following room assignments. All rooms are in PAA, the Physics - Astronomy Auditorium. EA, EB, EC are in A102; ED is in A110; FA, FB, FC are in A118; FD is in A114. You are allowed one two-sided handwritten 8.5 x 11 inch page of notes and a TI-30X IIS calculator.
