Math 111 - Fall 2020 - Grade Record
Read the annoucements then follow the link to the catalyst gradebook:
- The "HOMEWORK PERCENT", "TOTAL" and "GRADE" in the gradebook will only be updated after each exam (so three times this quarter).
- The "PARTICIPATION" will be recorded by your TA.
- You can miss two participation days without penalty to your grade (for emergencies), but you should plan to attend all of them.
- At the END of the term, I will add 5% to your homework score to a maximum of 100%, this helps to account for technical issues where you accidentally use a submission or you miss the closing date on a group of problems, so this should ease your mind if you may a silly mistake on a few homework problems.
- I am not willing to debate your grade. Grades are not need based, you get what you earn.
- Before you look at the grade, it is always good to reread the syllabus and look at the gradescale page.
- For midterm grades, I always take all the exams and make them worth 80% of your grade (because that is what it will be at the end of term). So note that your first midterm grade is heavily effected by your exam 1 score.
- We create grades as follows: Turn your scores into a percentage out of 100, decide the 4.0 line and the 2.0 line, and we make a linear scale between them, then we adjust the 4.0 and 2.0 lines to match university and department guidelines for medians and exam statistics.
- At the end of the term, I take improvement into account as follows: I take 70% of the average of the second exam and final, then replace the exam 1 percentage with this number (if it is higher). Because of this, everyone can still pass and get a decent grade even if they did very poorly on exam 1. BUT you must do better on the other exams.
