I am currently working with Professor Jim Morrow to investigate some of the mathematical foundations of information and coding theory. This consists primarily of probability theory, combinatorics, and abstract algebra. We are reading through Steven Roman's undergraduate text, "Introduction to Coding and Information Theory" in order to develop a sufficient background in the subject. As we go through this book we are discussing several problematic and/or somewhat ambiguous statements which we hope to better understand and explain in a more serious mathematical analysis than is sometimes given when considering the actual process of encoding and decoding messages.
