NWMI Summer Institute: Algebra and the Common Core
July 30 - August 3, 2012

ALGEBRA & the Common Core Content

A successful transition from more elementary math to algebra is a critical point in a student's mathematical education. In the current Washington Math Standards and the Common Core Math Standards. Students in eighth grade and earlier begin to learn about algebra concepts and then Algebra 1 sets the stage for advanced math courses. The NWMI Summer Algebra Institute based on engaging math tasks developed by two Washington Math Science Partnership projects: MCSP and MC3. Among other things, participants will explore

  • How the Common Core Progression Document follows proportional reasoning from early middel school into linear equations in algebra and beyond.
  • Tasks that engage new language in the Common Core, e.g., "Seeing Structure in Expressions".
  • The Functions Progression from eighth grade into high school.
  • The eight Standards for Mathematical Practice of CCSS.
  • PLUS a rich and relaxed optional program of After-Dinner Math.
FOR WHOM?
HS and MS Teachers who teach algebra. Any teachers who want a richer set of tools for addressing the geometry and measurement in the Math Standards of Washington and the Common Core.
