Choose from one of these 3 programs

Each summer since 1995, Northwest Mathematics Interaction (NWMI) presents a week of mathematics courses for math teachers.  This year there are new courses and a new relationship between Park City Mathematics Institute and Seattle Public Schools. NWMI is able to pay registration for teachers in Seattle Public Schools. Moreover, NWMI was told that Seattle Public Schools that will pay a stipend to participating teachers from Seattle Public Schools. Contact Rosalind Wise for more information.

NWMI offers several parallel programs during one week in August, 2004, on the University of Washington campus.  Clock hours and credit are available.  Breakfast and lunch are provided.

(1) Summer Geometry Institute for Teachers, August 8 13

The ninth NWMI Summer Geometry Institute will provide an amazing week of immersion in geometry, from Sunday evening through midday Friday. A variety of topics are investigated using a wide spectrum of active and hands-on approaches, from paper-folding and polyhedral models to Geometer's Sketchpad.

(2) New Course with work on CMP and TERC Investigations!
Middle Grades Program, Monday 8/9 - Thursday 8/12

We will show you how to enhance and extend your curriculum with hands-on activities from topics in CMP or Investigations such as these: concepts of number theory and systems, estimation, pattern and function, algebra, geometry, probability, and measurement. We'll have fun learning by doing with dozens of hands-on activities, but we will also work in groups to consider ways of teaching particular CMP modules and Investigations.  This will make a powerful mix of general math concepts and activities with focused preparation for teaching these standards-based materials.

(3) Investigations Minicourses for Teachers, August 9 12

A menu of 3 minicourses will provide something of interest to every math teacher. Each minicourse offers 15 hours of hands-on, in-depth exploration of a fascinating math topic relevant to school mathematics.  Take a single course or take one in each session!

Session A: (Monday, 8/9 - Tuesday, 8/10)

  • The World of Polyhedra
  • Teaching with Data

Session B: (Wednesday, 8/11 - Thursday, 8/12)

  • Counting & Number Patterns
