At the NWMC in Yakima I attended a session about a tool to explain why Y = 2•F(x) means dilation vertically by a factor of 2 and Y = F(2•X) means compression horizontally. The tool helps explain dilations, translations and reflections in a consistent way. Carla Parker: Science and Math Institute, Tacoma Public Schools: 25 minutes Gamify (and Mathify) Your Classroom Management Experience created games involving ‘radian measure’ and ‘types of polynomials’ which Carla uses to reward classes for completing homework. Mark Roop-Kharasch: 50 minutes Extensions and Orbits Don Helvie: Raymond Jr./Sr. High School, 25 minutes Reverse Subtraction Experience a method of subtracting from left to right without borrowing! Don developed this at a Ruth Parker seminar while watching elementary teachers explaining their number line reasoning.
