TI-NSPIRE COMES TO THE IPAD,  Art Mabbott,  Scholars Online

  • There is an APP for that!  After two years of development and negotiating with APPLE, TI has introduced the APP for both the Numeric and CAS version of the TI-NSPIRE.  This APP takes advantage of the power and strength of both the NSPIRE AND THE IPAD.  We will look at some activities on the iPad and participants will be allowed to try it out themselves.  The NSPIRE is an advanced calculator design.  But the APP adds the touch control of the IPAD!

Flexa-going, going, gone!  Anna Savoie,  Garfield High School

  • We’ll be making and exploring flexagons  as well as finding mathematically sound ways we can use them with our classes.  And, we’ll have fun exploring these little guys.

In the Footsteps of Newton,  Clint Chan,  Lynnwood High School

  • Seven Hanover College students take a life-changing journey to find out how a farm boy from humble origins ends up buried among kings in Westminster Abbey.  More information and a trailer can be found at http://math.hanover.edu/newton/.  Popcorn will be provided for this special viewing!

12:00 - 1:00 LUNCH

Afternoon 1:00 - 4:00

Math Games 2: Invitations to Investigations,   Mark Roop-Kharasch, Editor, Author, Math Game Designer for Qwizdom

  • Games provide an invitation to students to investigate things.  As they investigate they begin to discover patterns.  These patterns can lead to conjectures and from there attempts to prove. This is the kind of STEM thinking that is so important.

Expanding Your Geometry Toolkit with Dilations,  Jim King,  University of Washington

Dilations are the conceptual foundation of similarity in the Common Core State Standards.  But dilations are also a beautiful and powerful item in the geometry toolkit, allowing us to see and prove many lovely things.  We will explore some examples, both familiar and surprising.
