University of Washington Statistics Graduate Student
First, the role of an actuary will be defined, since many people do not even know what actuaries do! Then, the benefits of actuarial careers will be given - why is "actuary" consistently rated one of the best jobs in America? Also, from a UW undergraduate perspective, what are some attractive reasons to consider becoming an actuary? The current exam system will be explained in detail, especially with respect to the first couple exams that UW undergraduates can, and should attempt to, pass. In addition, classes, majors, and even extra-curricular activities will be recommended for students who are even casually interested about pursuing an actuarial career. Next, getting an internship and/or a full-time entry-level actuarial position will be discussed, including both salary range and geographic options. Then, the primary actuarial functions will be listed, along with what actuaries actually do on an every day basis, and the specialty tracks one can choose as their career progresses. Also, the primary differences between working in an insurance company and for a consulting form will be addressed. Finally, for those interested in competing, but related professions, (accounting, finance, business, stock market), a few comparisons will be made.
