Taking the DG/PDE Seminar for Credit
The Differential Geometry/PDE Seminar can be taken for graduate credit
as Math 550A. In order to obtain credit you must fulfill the following
requirements:
-
Attend the seminar each week (except that you are allowed one absence per
quarter). If you must have more than one absence in a quarter you should
discuss the matter with the seminar organizer.
-
From each of two seminars, choose a topic mentioned in the talk that interests
you and do a few hours of outside study on that topic. The topic need not
be the main focus of the seminar, but should be something which arose in
the talk and which you would like to know more about. Your outside study
may be a combination of reading, talking with the speaker or other experts,
or your own investigations. Then, for each of the two seminars you chose,
submit a one- to two-page written report describing the topic and how it
arose in the seminar, listing the sources you consulted, and briefly explaining
what you learned.
-
If you give a talk in the DG/PDE seminar, you are exempted from writing
reports during that quarter.
The written reports for item 2 above should be submitted to
Daniel Pollack.
Students who have passed prelims and are working with thesis advisers
may be required by their advisers to give one or more talks in the seminar.
Other students will not be required to talk, but we welcome volunteers.
If you have any questions about these requirements, feel free to contact
Daniel Pollack.
