DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY/PDE/NUMERICAL ANALYSIS SEMINAR Monday, November 6 Padelford C401 3:45 pm Robert Gutschera (Wellesley College and UW) AUTOMORPHISM GROUPS OF GEOMETRIC STRUCTURES Given a smooth manifold with some sort of geometric structure, such as a Riemannian metric, conformal structure, or CR structure, the group of automorphisms of that structure is typically a Lie group (unless the group is "too big"). Some particular structures (Riemannian, conformal, CR, Lorentz, and complex) will be surveyed, and the problem of the relation between the Lie topology and the compact-open topology on the automorphism group (the two topologies are not known to be the same in general) will be discussed. For more information about this seminar, view the Differential Geometry Seminar World-Wide Web page at https://www.math.washington.edu/~lee/Seminars/dg.html To request disability accommodations, contact the Office of the ADA Coordinator, at least ten days in advance of the event: 543-6450 (voice); 543-6452 (TDD); 685-3885 (FAX); access@u.washington.edu (E-mail).
