Textbook..      Calculus: Early Transcendentals,  5th edition, by James Stewart

Course material.   The purpose of this course is to introduce fundamental notions of calculus, such as limits, differentials and derivatives, develop basic differentiation skills, and learn how to use them in applications.  Prerequisites: either 2.5 in MATH 120, score of 68% on MATHPC placement test, score of 75% on MATHEC placement test, or score of 2 on advanced placement test.

Resources.

·        The MATH 124 web page for all sections.   This webpage contains weekly outline of the material to be covered in class, as well as the list of weekly worksheets, supplemental materials and homework.  There is also other useful information such as samples of old exams and quizzes.

·        Read the NOTE to the student which explains the general objectives and expectations of the course.

·        Math Study Center (Communications B-014):  This is a great place to study individually or in groups and the best place to get help.  It has tutors available to answer questions and many professors choose MSC as a place to hold office hours.   The MSC hours are:   M-Th. 9:30am – 9:30pm; Fri. 9:30am – 1:30pm; Sun. 2:00pm-6:00pm.

·        Class materials:  midterms, quizzes, practice exams, practice problems, some solutions/answers, review/hand-outs.

Worksheets.  There will be weekly worksheets done during the “long” TA session on Tuesday. You will do the worksheets in small groups with the help from your TA. BRING A COPY of the worksheet you will be working on to each Tuesday session. You can download them from the MATH 124 website. Go to the outline of the week you are currently in and then click on link for the ``worksheet”. You can also buy a packet containing all the worksheets, homework and old finals at the Copy Center in the basement of the Communications Building (down the hall from the Math Study Center). This is not required as the same materials are available from the above website but could be useful if printing them weekly is a problem.

Homework discussion and quizzes. During the “short” TA session on Thursday you will have an opportunity to ask questions about homework. There will be a 15 minute quiz every week at the end of the Thursday TA session with the exception of the 1st week and the weeks of the midterms.

Homework.    Homework assignments will be collected weekly during the Tuesday TA session, except for the first and last week, and the midterm weeks. You will find the exact schedule and links to the homework assignments here.  Check this page regularly for any updates about the homework. Click here for some additional practice problems.

Exams.  There will be two midterm exams during the Tuesday TA sessions: April 18th, and May 16 th.  The Final exam is on Saturday, June 3rd.

Calculator and notes policy for exams and quizzes. You may use a scientific calculator for Math 124. Graphing calculators are not allowed on quizzes and exams. The scientific calculator should have trigonometric functions, like Sin and Cos, as well as logarithms and exponentials (ln and exp). The calculator must not be a graphing calculator. A graphing calculator is any device with a multiline display that has the ability to graph mathematical functions. No notes are allowed at midterms and quizzes. One 8 x 11.5 sheet of handwritten notes (both sides) is allowed on the final exam.

Late homework and make-up. Late homework will NOT be accepted. If you cannot make it to class that day, try to arrange for someone else to hand in your homework. There are no make-ups in this class. The lowest worksheet score, homework score and quiz score will be dropped.  If you have to miss a midterm for a compelling and well-documented reason, talk to the instructor as soon as possible.
