Calculus, 10th Edition, by Salas, Hille and Etgen

Linear Algebra Done Wrong, by Sergei Treil. A hardcopy is available at the bookstore.

There will be two midterms, one final exam, homework assignments and quizzes. The midterms are 25% each, the final is 30%, the homework assignments are 10% and quizzes are 10% of your total grade. Late homework is not accepted and there are no quiz make ups. I will drop your lowest homework and quiz grade at the end of the quarter.

Week at a glance

Lectures are on MTuWF. Besides the textbooks, there may be supplementary handouts. I will not cover everything in lectures. You have to read the relevant sections in the textbooks and the handouts. Thursday quiz sections are for discussing problems with your TA. You should go to quiz sections prepared to ask and answer questions. There will be quizzes on most Thursdays. I will announce the quiz topic in lecture on Wednesdays if you remind me. The homework assignments are due on Mondays at the beginning of class.

Calculator policy

Calculators are not allowed on quizzes or exams.

Homework #8 due Tuesday 05/26

Here are the pictures for the two limit examples from lecture on Thursday.

There is a question about matching equations, graphs and level curves of a function of two variables on page 5 of this exam. The answers are here.

These are questions about the meanings of the partial derivatives: One with a graph (page 2) and one with a level curves (page 4) The answers are here and here.

This table summarizes calculus topics of this year from a geometric point of view. We did the first column in the Fall quarter. The second column was the first part of this quarter. We are now in the third column.

Here are the four linear algebra questions for the take home part of your final exam. The books are on reserve at the Odegaard library.

No class on 05/25

This is a page of examples of functions of two variables. For each example, there is the graph z=f(x,y), its level curves on the xy-plane and its gradient vectors.

This is a similar page with examples of functions of three variables. There are graphs of their level surfaces and gradient vectors.

Homework #9 due Monday June 01st

SHE, Sections 17.1-17.4 and center of mass from 17.5.

         Suggested problems for Week 10.

Review problems for the Final Exam.
