Brown Bag Teaching/Learning Seminar #8
Rutgers via VCR

I have just finished a really exciting and informative visit to Rutgers University, where both the Mathematics and Mathematics Education Departments have many interesting things going on. I was feeling skeptical about the possibility of conveying enough of it just by talking, but discovered at the last minute a videotape the Math Ed group made with funding by the Annenburg Foundation. It gives a very good summary of one of the particularly nice pieces: a longitudinal study of a group of children doing really neat problems and developing a sense of mathematical proof thereby, starting in the third grade and currently in the tenth. A copy of this tape is on its way to me even as I type, so I propose to make it the centerpiece of this Thursday's Brown Bag.

We will meet in the Math lounge at 12:30.
