Math 340
Math 340, Spring 1995
I will be substituting for Ed Curtis for a few lectures beginning
April 17. I will maintain a file of frequently
asked questions (FAQ) (dvi) that can been read at any time. I will also
include in this file copies of announcements, due dates for exercises and
test dates.
Some of you are having trouble viewing the files. Here are some tips that
I stole from Dave Collingwood to help you out.
If you click on a "postscript" or "dvi" file format, you will
need a special viewer. In the
case of a postscript file, you will use something called "ghostview"; in
the case of a dvi file, you use something
called "xdvi". Both are supported on any Unix account
on the machine ``stein''.
If you are on an X-term and click on an item which is indicated to
be a "...dvi file" or "...postscript file" you will
need to do a little extra work to view it. I will illustrate
how to proceed by way of two examples:
- Click on "solutions (ps)" in item 8. A window will popup
on your
terminal asking you if you want to
save this file to your account; it will specify a default filename
(in this case, "solIV.ps"). Click "OK" in the window. Depending on
the file size, it takes a few seconds
for this to load. You can see if
you have it in your account by typing ls[return]
in the "X-terminal window";
you should see the file "solIV.ps" listed. Now type
ghostview solIV.ps[return].
It will take a few seconds, then you will
see the solutions to problem set IV. You can then view or print following
the menu items (and rules about printing at your user site).
- Click
on "Homework (dvi)".
Again, a window will pop up asking if you want to save this file to
your account (as "hw.dvi"). Click "OK",
then type xdvi hw.dvi[return].
This will display the file, which you can
then view or print following
the menu items (and rules about printing at your user site).
Here is a copy of current course information.
