Notation Convention and List of Defining Data for an Isometry

·        The notation below will be used for isometries.  You are urged to use it also in your answer.

·        If a question asks for the type or kind of an isometry, the answer would be a word or words from the left-hand column.

·        If you are asked in a problem for the defining data for an isometry or to state precisely what isometry T is, this means to indicate the geometrical data that will tell precisely what the transformation is.  The answer to this question would be the information listed in the right-hand column.

(a)     Identity = I

State that all points are fixed.

(b)     Line Reflection = R_m

Specify the mirror line m.

(c)     Point Reflection = R_A

Specify the center point A.

(d)     Translation = T_v

Specify the translation vector v.

(e)     Rotation = A_t

Specify the center A and the measure t of the counterclockwise rotation.

(f)      Glide Reflection = G_AB

Specify the invariant line AB and the glide vector AB.
