Tangram Activity

Note: These instructions were accompanied by a handout describing how to fold and cut out a set of tangrams.

Do this work in groups of two or three.

1
Cut out the tangram pieces following the instructions.
2
Put the pieces back to form a square. You must use all the pieces with no overlap. When you have a solution, on a new piece of paper, trace around the pieces on a new sheet of paper to draw a figure that shows your solution
3

Determine the exact dimensions of each of the tangram pieces (length of sides, angles, and area). The numbers should be exact and be determined by reasoning and not measuring. They should not be decimal approximations. Write these dimensions on your figure.

Record these examples of your reasoning on the sheet of paper with your figure (on the back, if necessary).

4

How to you know the side lengths and angles of the large triangles. What kind of triangle is this (use as much geometrical terminology as you can)?

5

How do you know the "square" piece is really a square?

6

How do you know the "parallelogram" piece is really a parallelogram?
